Library History:
The Crossville Public Library, is a member
of the DeKalb County Library System, serving the area surrounding
Crossville, AL and lower DeKalb County.
Founded in 1971, by the Crossville Woman's Club, with the support of the Crossville Jaycees, Home Demonstration Club and the Crossville School P.T.O, the Library, was forced to move several times, and for 24 years was housed in inadequate and undesirable facilities. During those years, financial support, as well as operating personnel was provided strictly by volunteers. The books themselves were donated by local residents and/or supplied by loans from the DeKalb County Library, in Ft. Payne, Alabama. On November 26, 1995, the Library moved into a building purchased by the Crossville Town Council and renovated with funds generated through many fund raising projects and private donations through the Friends of the Library.
The mission of the Crossville Public Library
is to provide quality recreational and informational services to the
area surrounding Crossville, Alabama and lower DeKalb County. Library
services include, but are not limited to, providing a current and
diverse library collection that includes 8,000 fiction and non-fiction
books, videos and recorded books. Included in the book collection are a
large number of large print books as well as a section of
Spanish/English bilingual children's books. The Library also supports
the Accelerated Reader Program, based in the Crossville Elementary
School, and has a large number of Accelerated Reader books at all
levels. In cooperation with the school, the Library provides testing
facilities and a reading program during the summer months.
Approximately 1500 people reside in the served area and there are 1050
library card holders.
In our Information Services
Department provides cable modem internet access at the public access stations as well as an online card catalog. There is
also a fax machine and copier available for patron usage.
Millie Bagwell, our librarian, currently
works 30 hours a week, and facilitates the Nursing Home out reach
program. The Library also qualifies for a TARCOG worker for 20
hours a week.
Volunteers continue to be an invaluable
asset to the Library including the Library Board and by providing
bimonthly story time for three head start programs, the summer reading
program, assistance in accessing collection additions, as well as
various fundraisers throughout the year. Ken Robson, a volunteer in
Rochester, NY, designed and maintains our web page.
